Poetry Slam with the World Champion! This year, "Poetry Slams with Champions" will take place on August 8, at 8 pm in the Great Hall of the Riga Latvian Society House. The event will be even more ambitious than last year - the winners of the 8 Poetry National Championships from 7 European countries will meet on the same stage, including 2024 European champion Teresa Spperling from Germany and the winner of the 2025 World Cup, current Scottish champion Bif Smith.
The Poetry Slam will also feature second -place European Championship winner and England 2024 champion Sven Stier, this year's England champion Kofi Akina, 2024 Greece Michelle Hover and current Macedonian champion Milan Pednev, 2023 Norwegian champion Maria Bliznak Champion Klemenz West and several other Latvian poetry slam scene. This time, the event leader, or MC, will be John Paul O'Neal, founder of Farrago Poetry, the first London poetry Slam, Farrago Poetry.
Poetry Slam is a race in which poets perform with their poems using rhythm, intonation, voice timbre, emotionality to convey a message to the audience. Both poetry and its performance, valued by randomly selected viewers, are essential for Slam. Each poet is given only 4 minutes. The highest rating can participate in Round 2 with another poem. The Slam winner is determined in the third round.
Poetry slam with champions is organized to show the most recognized performances of European and world poetry participants for the Latvian audience. Poetry slams in Latvia have been going on since 2011. This year there have already been 8 Slami - Riga, Cesis and Limbazi. The closest regular poetry slams - July 19 in Rezekne, Cultural Bar "Līpuoja", July 26 - in Liepaja, in the art space "Veranda". All the regular slam finalists in Latvia this year will be able to participate in the third Latvian National Championship on September 5 and 9 at the Riga Latvian Society House, and the winner of the Championship in the European Championship in Berlin.
The poems in a foreign language will have access to a translation in Latvian. The event is supported by the State Culture Capital Foundation and the Riga Latvian Society. Organized by the Totaldobre Art Center.
