Experimental music festival "Skaņu mežs'2024" - already in a month

In the cultural building "Hanzas Perons" ( Hanzas Street 16A) on October 4th and 5th, the experimental music festival "Skaņu mežs 2024" will be held, which the media "The Wire magazine" called the biggest avant-garde music festival in the Baltics. On September 28, it will be opened with a free concert evening at the bar "Laska V21" (Vagonu Street 21).

Main guests - electronic duo Autechre and abstract hip-hop group Armand Hammer. As always, the event will gather on one stage experimental musicians of various genres, from electro-acoustic, contemporary music and free improvisation to experiments in pop music, metal and hip-hop. The festival will offer 20 performances, 3 installations and 7 master classes or lectures.

At the opening event of the festival (September 28), composer Ernests Valts Circenis will perform with electronic works, drummer Aaron Edgcomb and guitarist Kirsten Carey free improv duo and electro-acoustic music composer, publisher and event organizer John Chantler. In the final part of the event, DJ sets will be played by musician Nick Klein, who a week later will perform and install at "Hanzas Peron", and sound artist Đirts Reiniks, who, among other things, hosts the "Skaņu meža" program on "Radio NABA".

The most important guests of the first central night of the festival (October 4) are the iconic British electronic music duo Autechre, who will perform in total darkness, the guitar innovator Fred Frith, called a “giant of avant-garde music” by the Chicago Reader, and Jennifer Walshe, considered “the most original Irish composer of the last 20 years” (The Irish Times) .

The second evening (October 5) will be marked by a focus on the points of contact of experimental music with hip-hop, metal and punk: performances will be given by a duo Armand Hammer, called "true underground rap legends" by The Washington Post, extreme metal duo The Body in collaboration with industrial post-club music producer and vocalist Dis Fig, which promises to be the loudest concert of the festival, and noizpunk duo Deli Girls.

The American indigenous composer Raven Chacon had planned to perform at the festival last year, but was forced to cancel the performance due to personal reasons. Currently, Chacon has received not only the Pulitzer Prize in music, but also the so-called MacArthur "genius award", and he will already perform in "Sound Forest 2024" as one of the most awarded American experimental musicians of our time.

The innovative music platform "SHAPE+" is a project that "Skaņu mežs" created together with the Prague art center "MeetFactory" almost ten years ago. Currently, it includes 18 leading European music festivals and is supported by the European Union, the Pro Helvetia Foundation and the Latvian Ministry of Culture. In the festival program, the platform will be represented by Australian-born electro-acoustic music composer John Chantler and Polish beatmaker 2K88. which, in turn, focuses on sound art and the artistic contemplation of technology, gave "Skaņu mež" the opportunity to commission new works from such artists as producer Nick Klein, trombonist Tintin Patrone and "harsh noise wall" proponent Vomir. All three will perform both musical performances and present sound art installations.

Following the increase in public interest observed last year, the festival has expanded its program of educational events: seven free master classes will be held at the Jāzeps Vītolas Latvian Music Academy and the Latvian Academy of Arts series directed by Fred Frith, Jennifer Walsh, Neil Lack, David Laskowski, Are Mokkelbost, Charmaine Lee and Raven Chacon.

The alternative club music scenes of the Baltic countries will be represented by producers Undveld (Lithuania) and Dharma Doom (Estonia).

The festival will be documented by experimental music concert photographer Dāwid Laskowski, who is best known for his work in the prestigious concert hall "Cafe OTO", while the concert will be reviewed by journalists such as Peter Margasak , “The Wire Magazine”), Daryl Worthington (“The Quietus”), Victor Moreno (“Metal Magazine”) and others.

The full festival program will be available on the festival website.

The "Forest of Sounds" festival is supported by the State Cultural Capital Fund, Riga City Council, the Danish Cultural Institute, the Goethe Institute in Riga, "Culture Ireland" and the "Trust for Mutual Understanding" fund.

"Skaņu mežs" is a member of the innovative music platform "SHAPE+" and the "tekhnē" project - both are supported by the European Union and the Ministry of Culture of Latvia. SHAPE+ is also supported by the Pro Helvetia Foundation. "2k88" represents "SHAPE+", while the new works of Nick Klein and Tintina Patrone are created within "techné".

The festival has also started participating in the North European experimental music festival network "NERDS" (North European Resonance and Dissonance Society).

Festival cooperation partners are "Mans Robots", "Valmiermuiža", "Laima", "Staburadze", "Augliu Serviss", "Very Berry" and "Balta".

Informative support: "The Quietus", "TVNET", "Satori", "Rīgas Laiks", "Ir" , radio "NABA" and "Mūzikas Saule".
