Recommended for ages 16+ Upper Austria, mid-18th century . The isolated and traditional village is separated from the outside world by a lush forest massif. At the top of the hill, the body of a woman punished for the death of a newborn child is found, which serves as a warning to the locals. Believer Agnes perceives the dead woman's body as a sign of divine will - she feels pity for it. The young woman takes part in the big event of her life - her wedding with Wolff - but the newly acquired status unleashes a hard heart in her. In an emotionally alienated world of God, nature, and work, she feels more and more doomed and trapped. As melancholy takes hold, Agnes frees her thoughts from herself...Walking along the same sluggish folk horror path where Eggers' historical drama "The Witch" (2015), Franca and Fiala's highly acclaimed, stimulating, unsettling work of the viewer's senses takes us into a rarely dark, shadowy area of the psyche . A rare director dares to take the audience this far - here is also a direct reference to the doses of the modern shock doctrine of the Austrian Ulrich Seidl, the film's producer and co-director's spouse. Hellishly rich in earthy textures and aurally heavenly, the work (in the role of the composer herself Anja Plašga ("Soap&Skin") was awarded at the Berlinale with the "Silver Bear" for the best artistic achievement for cinematographer Martin Gschlacht. This timeless, emotional spiral-like film, referring to the 18th century phraseology about depression as being in the "cauldron of hell", opens a little-known chapter of European history - it is based on the legal proceedings of two women of Austrian origin.
