Recommended for ages 16+ Dickens-like Copenhagen 1919 . in the year The young, poor seamstress Karulíne is looking for her husband, who was lost in the war. Turning to the head of the sewing factory for help, a passionate affair breaks out between them. After being rejected by her boss and losing her job, Karulíne is left alone with an illegitimate child. She gets closer to Dagmar, the owner of the sweet and adoption booth, who takes care of her stepchildren. However, not exactly as Karulína had imagined... If the beginning of the film, similar to the outlines of delicious black ink, promises the resurrection of a humble Cinderella, then what follows turns into a psychological horror of the Brothers Grimm. Swedish director van Horn's otherworldly, ugly-beautiful film has gained an odious reputation in Cannes' main competition. Sophisticated auteur cinema, a deafening essence of the genre and the dance of death of social classes, but above all – an aesthetically ingenious interpretation of the Danish serial killer Dagmar Overby (played by the Danish grand dame Trine Dyrholm). A shocking cinematic experience – one of the defining works of this year's cinema, anatomically dissecting the themes of sisterhood, solidarity and the autonomy of the female body.
