Recommended from age 7 After Mom's Gone Dad takes 11-year-old Karina to a rural Japanese town to live with her grandfather, who is a practicing monk. The grandfather asks the vital, sometimes capricious cat Anzu to look after the young girl. The russet yellow and talking Anzu, who never seems to age, is a hardworking companion. However, misunderstandings initially arise between the two. Unexpectedly, Anzu's friendship will give Karina such adventures and encounters that will change the girl's life. For the first time in the history of the festival, showing anime, the film is dedicated to RIGA IFF's youngest viewers and fans of the genre. The feature film screened at Cannes Directors' Fortnight, Annecy and other major film festivals is based on a manga comic created by Takeshi Imashiro. The life-affirming film about fitting in and friendship that can change our future finds parallels with the 21st century animation classic - Miyazaki's Long Lives (2001) and other films of the legendary Studio Ghibli. The bright, benignly eccentric and humorous example of the fusion of Japanese and French cinema will delight viewers of all ages.
