Children of war and peace
Sodan ja rauhan paspet

Recommended from the age of 12 Kino chronicles and archive footage in series, the opus of the generation "brought up for their country" was born. These are the children who, after the independence of Finland in 1917, experienced the rise of nationalism at all levels of life. The crying babies in the white katun cloths in the courtyard of the hospital grew up to be the students of the lessons of war, the basic rules of hygiene and the excellence of housekeeping. As the years pass, discipline, ideals and pathos experience changing contours - they await the enemy they have taught. And soon – ten years later – it is the generation that defined the next war.
Meditating on the thesis “if you want peace, prepare for war”, the scale of the montage film by the experienced Finnish director and film critic Suhonen absorbs the viewer. The ornaments of moving images and photographs, radio recordings and books, periodicals and government documents reveal the totality of the cinematic metric. The work of the "Big Screen" competition of the Rotterdam Film Festival demonstrates excellence both in rhythm and narration, as well as in aesthetics, making painful allegorical similes ring out. It is a youth that lived a hundred years ago - its paranoia, ignorance and anxiety are similar to the contours of our time, when a war in Ukraine rages a thousand kilometers from the cinema.
