The experimental music festival "Skaņu mežs 2024" will be held in the cultural building "Hanzas Perons" (Hanzas Street 16A) on October 4 and 5, which the media "The Wire magazine ” called the largest avant-garde music festival in the Baltics.
As always, the event will gather on one stage experimental musicians of various genres, from electro-acoustic, contemporary music and free improvisation to experiments in pop music, metal and hip-hop.
The program of the first night:
Autechre (Great Britain)
Considered as the main guests of the first night, the electronic music duo "Autechre" have been described as 'indescribably influential' (Mixmag) and 'iconic' (Resident Advisor). Starting with important works in the so-called "IDM" subgenre and ambient music, "Autechre" have cultivated a changing and structurally unpredictable sound, which in the later stages prioritized the clutter of electro-acoustic influences and compositional elements. Their performance will take place in complete darkness.

Fred Frith (UK, USA)
The New York Times media in 1949 British-born Fred Frith has been described as "one of the most respected figures in the field where rock music meets the avant-garde", while the newspaper "Chicago Reader" has called Frith a "giant of avant-garde music".
Fred Frith's solo performance in "Forest of Sounds'2024" is connected with the fact that his historical record "Guitar Solos" is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. To celebrate the occasion, Week-End Records has reissued Guitar Solos with a brand new record called Fifty, which showcases how his solo guitar language has evolved over fifty years.

Charmaine Lee (Australia, USA)
Charmaine Lee, born in Sydney and living in New York, stands out with a unique style of vocal improvisation characterized by spontaneity and playfulness. The voice is combined with technical aids – amplifiers, microphones and sound conversion equipment. She uses amplification to make even the "smallest" and otherwise random sounds in the mouth audible, making them a central element in her music.
Lee has lectured at a number of institutions, including Princeton, Columbia and Stanford universities. "The New Yorker" called him "stunning".

Vomir (France)
French sound artist and noise musician Romain Perrot, who works under the pseudonym Vomir, started his career already in 1996, and since then his works have seen more than 300 publications. Media such as "The Quietus" and "Les Presses du Réel" recognized him as the leader of the "harsh noise wall" movement: his performances are simultaneously destructive and loud, but also static. His "anti-everything" view of music has been characterized as follows: "no ideas, no changes, no development, no fun, no regrets".

Jennifer Walshe & Neil Luck (Ireland)
Walshe is one of the best-known Irish composers today. Noted music critic and columnist Alex Ross wrote about her music for The New Yorker: “[..] Walsh is better than any artist I know of at portraying the grotesque, the dirty, the raucous, the desperate for confessions, and at the same time also almost sublime nature. [...] She has proven herself not only as a composer, but also as a captivating vocalist, divisive comedian and storyteller, as well as a prolific author of video works and visual art."

Walša will perform in the "Forest of Sounds" together with her compatriot Nīla Laka - a composer and vocalist primarily interested in musical theater and multimedia art. Laks has participated in such events as the Venice Biennale and the notable classical and contemporary music festival 'BBC Promenade', as well as collaborated with such art institutions as the Tate Gallery and the Institute for Contemporary Arts. Nick Klein (USA, Germany)
Nick Klein seeks to utilize the energy generated by the interaction of sound and visual art, sometimes turning to this for the social potential of the process. Klein also enjoys noise, cooking, socializing in the physical world, records, bars, synthesizers, and comedy. Currently, the artist lives in Berlin. It is mentioned that volume is considered and emphasized as an artistic form of expression in his works.
"The visceral nature of Nick Klein's recordings cannot be easily imitated," writes the Miami New Times. “This is thanks to his work with texture, volume and recording methods: in Klein's hands, the material is changed by the medium.”
