"Skaņu mežs'2024" - second evening, one-day ticket

On October 4 and 5, the experimental music festival "Skaņu mežs 2024" will be held in the cultural building "Hanzas Perons" (Hanzas Street 16A), which the media "The Wire magazine" called it the biggest avant-garde music festival in the Baltics.

As always, the event will gather on one stage experimental musicians of various genres, from electro-acoustic, contemporary music and free improvisation to experiments in pop music, metal and hip-hop.

Second night program:

Armand Hammer (billy woods & ELUCID) (USA)

In abstract hip-hop duet Armand Hammer includes rappers ELUCID and Billy Woods. Regarding their latest record, We Buy Diabetic Test Strips, The Washington Post writes: "Armand Hammer's latest album confirms that they are true underground rap legends." Reviewer Jason Buford comments that the duo's music is rough and atmospheric, while its main themes are gentrification, commercialization and brutal capitalism.

Several tracks on the album were produced by musicians such as "JPEGMAFIA ”, “Preservation” and “El-P” of Run The Jewels. British saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings also participated in the recording.

The Guardian calls the same record "an album that deserves your undivided attention" and highlights rapper Billy Woods' special status in independent hip-hop. "He's going through a purple period of royal reputation right now," notes journalist Kitty Empire.

The Body & Dis Fig (USA, Germany)

The American publication "Rolling Stone" called the duo "The Body" "one of the most interesting bands in heavy music", adding that they create music that is hard to define by genre. This is probably because it is separated from the conventions of the doom or sludge metal subgenres by bold experiments with other genres, from power electronics and noise to bass music. The unique vocals of guitarist and vocalist Chip King are also particularly noteworthy - they are sharp, sharp, vocal distortions that create a distance between the performer and the achieved sound: when you close your eyes, it's hard to imagine a body that would own such a voice.

The duo's new record 'Orchards of a Futile Heaven' is out on Thrill Jockey and features vocalist and industrial post-club music producer Felicia Chen aka 'Dis Fig”. Her temperament is a good fit for the band, with Pitchfork describing her 2019 solo album PURGE as "emotionally tense" and full of contrasting moments of violence and refuge.

Raven Chacon (USA)

46-year-old Raven Chacon became the first Native American in 2022 to receive Pulitzer Prize in Music. In the context of this festival, the fact that he is one of the few experimental musicians whose career has been marked by this award is also significant. Media The New York times writes the following: "Chacon is the first harsh noise musician to receive the Pulitzer Prize."

Chacon was scheduled to perform at last year's "Forest of Sounds", but the artist canceled the visit due to the death of a family member. However, in 2024, Chacon will come to the "Forest of Sounds" already as a laureate of the prestigious MacArthur "genius grant" - receiving this award alongside the Pulitzer Prize in music, Chacon has become one of the most awarded avant-garde composers in the USA.

Gundega Šmite and Gunta Gelgote (Latvia)

Composer Gundega Šmite's new work "Four electro-acoustic love poems" will be performed by singer Gunta Gelgote. It is a cycle in which the author seeks to merge the boundaries between poetry and music, creating a continuous unity between spoken and sung word, poetic structure and musical phrase.

As the composer says, as a result of the electronic transformation of Gelgote's voice will get an "alter ego" - "in various metamorphoses of shadow, amplification, and sound".

The cycle is based on four love poems by Gundega Šmite, which will acquire musical dimensions in the context of an electroacoustic piece, and this the project is interesting in that it sheds light on Schmidt's musical and literary interests at the same time.

Deli Girls (USA)

Deli Girls is a chaotic, emotionally saturated noizpunk project with elements of dance and metal music. Its constant member is vocalist Danny Orlowski, who works with a rotating array of DJs and producers within the group, most recently Hatechild. Both are united by queer and outsider values, and the artists add to their biography: "Down with the police, prisons and immigration control!" to forms of music that will remind some of their childhood and others will simply be tacky: "Like the best of supermarket pop-punk or nu-metal, the music of 'Deli Girls' reminds you of what it's like to feel invincible."

Dharma Doom (Estonia)

Dharma Doom is an experimental electronic music producer attached to the Estonian event series and artist collective "Shelter", who himself described as "ritualistic and archaic". "Dharma Doom" tracks are often composed of layers of noise, hums and distorted beats. The musician is also active in the band 'KEETAI' and is experienced in music genres such as noise music, power electronics and experimental metal.

Undveld (Lithuania)

The festival "Skaņu mežs'2024" will be closed by the Lithuanian dark electronic music project "Undveld", whose work can be seen in ambient and noise musical elements as well as techno and industrial music. Undveld's discography serves as a versatile insight into Lithuanian experimental electronic music and demonstrates the project's aesthetic scale from minimalist and meditative music to tight and abrasive.
