The Cannes Film Festival program hosted the premiere of the restored, odious and controversial Tinto Brasa films - the grandiose decadent biographical work "Kaligula".
One of the loudest scandals in the history of cinema, which once shaken the Puritanic consciousness of the audience, was finally shown in the version he had intended and wanted to see the authors themselves.
The unique reconstruction is a brand new version of the shocking, cult cinematographic classic with an unprecedented amount of never showing a shot. There is no fragment in the film from the original version! It is a movie for a very mature and prepared viewer. However, those who are ready to risk and accept this work on its special and sometimes crazy rules will most likely agree with Helen Miren's final assessment - she described the film as "a lovely irresistible combination of art and genitalia".
"Copper corrupt, absolute power corrupt absolutely." (John Dalberg-Lectone)
Remember what the classic claimed? "There has been no, no, and never more powerful and noble power than the power of the Emperor's Tiberia!"
The time has passed, with a lot of water in Tibra, and in the battles of the great Rome has lost many of his greatest sons.
The bloody tyrant and paranoid Tiberie, who holds the country in constant fear, is old and weak, but no less dangerous. And while he is ready to die, the impatient heir seems to be doing it too long and unconvincing.
The dictator holds on to the lives of the quenching, but the emperor's ring is too heavy for a stretched hand. However, one careless movement with a dagger is enough, and… "Ave, Caesar", stay healthy, dear Tiberia, you dealt with your own weapon.
The third Roman emperor becomes the unmanageable Gay Julia Caesar August Germanik, more commonly known for the nickname Kaligula.
He was the most exciting ruler, the hope of the empire, but the joy was short. In the eighth month of reign, Gay was seriously ill and seemed to lose common sense. It is in this state that we encounter him in Tinto Brasa's film.
The Romans of that time were difficult to surprise with cruelty or perpetuation, but Caligula, for them, was unfortunate, and was also an extremely impulsive, ambitious and sickly selfish person.
This passionate enthusiast, unable to control his congenital bloodthirsty and a shortage of shame, pushes the country into the abyss of cruelty and fornication - in unbridled orgies, incestorious and destroyed in the abyss. His name became the name of the species, not because of reforms or achievements, but due to mass repression, perpetuation and immoral communications.
The perfect image of power chaos, insanity and lawlessness. Caligula's temporary reign will become one of the bloodiest pages in the history of the Roman Empire.
Is it really, or did it become the fruit of the imagination for ancient historians - the sensitive Tacit and the excellent educated Joseph Flavia? It doesn't matter if you believe in this legend, because there is no evidence. Everything is simple: "History, Kaligula! History!"
It is a movie for a very mature and prepared viewer.
However, those who are ready to risk and accept this work on its special and sometimes crazy rules will most likely agree with Helen Miren's final assessment - she described the film as "a lovely irresistible combination of art and genitalia".
