Guinness Book of Records, 16 million discs worldwide, the most famous female disco duo "Baccara"
Everything started in 1976. Maite (Maria Teresa) Mateos and Maria Mendiola met on a Spanish televised ballet tour. As it turned out, the women had a lot in common. Maria got the idea to try herself and Maita as a musical group and perform on stage. This idea was successfully implemented, and the duo began to perform in the nightclub. They achieved their first success at the Tres Islas hotel on the island of Fuerteventura. The audience liked their performances, and the vocalists became a real "musical" magnet for visitors to the popular resort. At that time, the duo did not have their own author, and they sang the hits of ABBA and Donna Summer.
1976. In 2010, they started performing on Spanish television under the name "Duo Venus". Soon there was a meeting with the German producer, composer and arranger, Rolf Soy, an employee of the RCA recording studio, who chose the songwriter Frank Dostal for the duet, and also came up with a name for it. The first single "Yes Sir, I Can Boogie" is released. The song immediately topped the charts, becoming an international phenomenon. The song catapulted the group to disco icon status, and its popularity remains decades later.
"Yes Sir I Can Boogie" became the female duo's first single to reach and hold the number one spot on the charts. The single "Yes Sir I Can Boogie" has sold more than 16 million records worldwide. As a result, the duo "Baccara" entered the Guinness Book of Records as the female group that sold the most copies of a single.
Triumph of a successful debut. All television and radio channels broadcast the duet's songs, everyone wants to interview them. The next single, "Sorry I'm A Lady", also reached the top of the charts in November 1977, staying at number one in Germany for 7 weeks. In the same year, the first album "Baccara" was released. The album goes gold, double gold, platinum, double platinum.
"Baccara" participates in the 8th World Popular Music Festival of the Japanese corporation "Yamaha" (Tokyo, November 11, 1977), where with the song "Mad in Madrid" represents Germany.
1978. On April 22, "Baccara" represented Luxembourg at the Eurovision Song Contest in Paris, where with the song "Parlez-vous Francais?" took 7th place.
1979. In January 2016, a new album was released - "Colors", the song from which "The Devil Sent You To Lorado" is included in the German top ten. The girls regularly perform on television, especially in Germany, Spain and Great Britain, and also participate in the most popular music shows - "Sacha Distel Show" in England and "Musikladen" in Germany.
"Baccara" creativity still fascinates fans all over the world. Their style, combining energetic disco with romance, embodied the era of the 70s and continues to inspire new generations. In November 2020, after reaching the European Championship qualifying final for the first time in 22 years, the Scottish football team celebrated by dancing to "Yes Sir, I Can Boogie" in the stadium dressing room. The video blew up the world's social networks. As a result, "Yes Sir, I Can Boogie" reached No. 2 on the Official Singles Chart 100 and iTunes (UK) in November, and reached No. 3 on the Official Big 40 Chart.
