Kamasi Washington, one of the world's brightest and most inspiring saxophonists, multi-instrumentalists, composers and contemporary jazz greats, will perform at the Pink Noise Riga festival on July 26, 2025. The superstar's only Baltic concert as part of the festival will take place in Riga's Wondersala!
Kamasi Washington has released a series of the most recognized records of the century, including The Epic (2016), Heaven and Earth (2018) and Fearless Movement (2024). He has been called both the modern "musical unicorn" and "savior of jazz", as well as "the high priest of the saxophone" and "ideological successor of John Coltrane". Washington's ambitious arrangements are rooted in post-bop, funk, soul, and hip-hop, while his unique saxophone sound has been well-placed by such greats as Herbie Hancock, The Florence + the Machine, Kendrick Lamar, André 3000, and even Metallica and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. in music.
Washington's music for Michelle Obama's documentary Becoming earned an Emmy and Grammy nominations. Meanwhile, the Washington supergroup Dinner Party, in which he plays with friends Terrace Martin, Robert Glasper and 9th Wonder, was nominated for a Grammy for Best Progressive R&B Album.
Born in 1981 in Los Angeles, Kamasi Washington first started playing drums at the age of three, and turned to the clarinet at the age of nine. Until the age of eleven, Kamasi mostly listened to hip-hop. Then he came across Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers' records and fell in love with jazz. Mastered his father's (famous jazz and church musician Ricky Washington) extensive vinyl collection, and initially taught himself to play the saxophone. At the age of thirteen, he told his father that he wanted to become a jazz musician. His first alto saxophone was given to him by his father (Conn 6M - the same one played by the legendary Charlie Parker) and Kamasi played it in church. He turned to the tenor saxophone (the musician still plays on the legendary Selmer Mark VI instrument given to him by his father) a little later, and the rest is already history...
