Farewell concerts of the legendary "Chicago Five" musician Armands Birkens

On July 5 at the Salacgriva Fishermen's Park stage and on July 21 at the Dzintari concert hall, concerts of the legendary "Chicago Five" musician Armands Birkens will be held, designed as his farewell from the stage. This will be an exclusive opportunity to enjoy the singer's performance in public for the last time.

The concert will also be attended by special guests - Armand's long-time stage partner Lorija Vuda-Cinkusa, singer Ieva Akuratere, accordionist Rolands Zelčs from the ensemble "Hägenskalnas muzikanti", a children's pop group "Carameles" and many other friends.

Armand Birken joined the "Chicago Five" 52 years ago - in 1973.

The group "Chicago Five" is a phenomenon! During the Soviet period, it was like a breath of fresh freedom for Latvia. Lyrics that humorously criticized the establishment and our idols of freedom. Legal and illegal recordings of the "Chicago Five" were republished on cassettes and tapes.

In 2008, Armands performed together with the "Chikāgas Piecīš" at Mežapark's Big Stage, where around 90 thousand listeners gathered, so this concert could be considered one of Latvia's records in terms of the number of visitors. In 2013, together with his "Chicago Five" colleagues, he received the "Latvian Music Recording of the Year Award" for his lifetime contribution.

"For this concert, I will choose songs that have had a special place in my life: patriotic, romantic and funny songs and, of course, also songs about Latvia. Also, the listeners will be able to ask me questions and maybe I will share short anecdotes about some songs, as well as about my years in Piecīšos," says Armands Birkens. "I am currently in a particularly emotional phase of my life - I am about to stop my musical activity. Therefore, this concert will be especially sweet and bittersweet for me. I sincerely thank everyone who will come, because being with the audience is very important to me!"

Lauria Wood speaks about Armand Birken very sincerely: "I know Armand very well, and not only in connection with "Chicagos for five". We are old friends - our families were friends in Chicago when I was a little girl. I have been by Armand's side not only during the "Five", but also at various family celebrations. I know that Armands is an absolute patriot of Latvia and a great activist in the diaspora, or, as he said earlier, exile society. Armand has a good heart and has always stood out for his helpfulness. Not only in my eyes, but also in the eyes of other people, Armand has earned great respect for supporting lonely seniors who have no one to belong to. If someone needs to be taken to a doctor or transported somewhere, he never refuses help. This is a rare quality in my view. I am unspeakably happy to know such a person as Armands Birkens. His name really should be written with a capital letter!"
