Gogol. Portrait
Based on Nikolai Gogol's short story
Gogol's short story "Portrait" does not sound at all like a romantic novel in today's world. It is built on the Faustian motif of the sale of the soul and includes a premise that moves what is happening from the everyday plane into the metaphysical zone. Gogol creates a world in which the embodiment of evil needs an artist, so that evil can realize itself, express itself, prove its existence. And, unable to resist the temptation, he who could serve the beautiful begins to serve the devil. This is a terrible tale that is relevant today.
“When you meet a character in Gogol's text who, intoxicated by power and vengeful jealousy, “with the fury of a tiger pounced on, tore, tore, cut to pieces and trampled underfoot” all living things and the talent that could be achieved, you are surprised because of the total, prophetic actuality of this image," says the playwright Esther Ball. “Gogol's devil puppets are devastating and deadly, but the damage they can do is still comparable to human abilities. Today, the devil's puppets have ballistic missiles and a nuclear arsenal at their disposal..."
The myth of the artist who could not resist the temptation of the easy way develops in the play into an eschatological mystery full of disastrous temptations on the edge of the abyss.
