I composed this work especially for the actor Eugenio Allegri and the director Gabriel Vachis. They staged this play and it was shown to the public for the first time at the Asti Festival in July 1994. I don't know if it would be fair if I said that I had written this work for the theatre: I'm not sure about that. Now, when I hold the book in my hands, I rather feel that this masterpiece is a rough middle ground between a theater production and a story. I don't know if anyone has an idea what to call such a composition. But it is not so important. I thought it was a story worth telling.
A. B.
1994. September of 2011

He said: “You are alive as long as you have a wonderful story and someone to tell it to.” He had a… wonderful story. He himself became this story. If you think about it, a crazy story, but so beautiful...
Alessandro Barico “1900. The legend of the pianist"

1994. In 2008, the third work of the Italian writer, playwright, journalist, essayist, literary and music critic, host of intellectual talk shows Alessandro Barico saw the light of day, entitled "Novecento", which means "Nineteenth Century" or "Twentieth Century" in Italian. But chronology and calendar have nothing to do with it: Novecento is the nickname of the main character, and it is just one of the unusual translators with a tongue-in-cheek hook who latched onto this truly wonderful story: captivating, funny, touching, a little sad... and inspiring.
1900. On the first day of the year, a baby was found in a lemon box on the ship "Virginija". The boy became an excellent pianist, although no one had taught him to play. The son of the ocean and the piano, Novecento never set foot ashore, but lived a life full of travel and adventure: Paris and London, Africa and the Arctic sounded in his music... Novecento charmed the audience and conjured their desires, played "some notes of his own" and played a musical duel with the "inventor of jazz"... He left with his world, which was a ship, but the legend remained.
This play has been staged several times in Italy, San Marino, France and other European countries. In 1998, Italian director Giuseppe Tornatore's film "The Legend of the Pianist" with Ennio Morricone's music appeared on the screens, which received many awards, including "Golden Globe" for the original soundtrack (soundtrack). When the book was translated into Russian, the Russian actor and director Oleg Menshikov created a one-man play "1900." (2008), which generated huge critical and public interest.
The story of the pianist of the ship "Virginia" was staged in Riga for the first time by Dmitrijs Petrenko: in 2016, the premiere of the concert performance "Novecento" was held in Spīķeri, in which the role of the pianist was played by Vestards Šimkus, and the role of the narrator was played by Kristaps Ķeselis (National Theater of Latvia) in the Latvian version and Maksims Busels - Russian.
The production at the Riga Russian Theater is neither a repetition nor a reconstruction of Dmitri Petrenko's project, but a completely new show with a new creative team (although the audience will be able to see Maksims Busels again); Uldis Marhilevičs will become the pianist. Alessandro Barrico's musical simile has many shades and allows for a wide variety of treatments. The Riga Russian Theater version is another reading of the legend of the Ocean Pianist.

Alessandro Barico was born in 1958 in Turin. During his studies, he obtained a degree in philosophy and graduated from the piano class of the conservatory, published two essays on music criticism, wrote for the newspapers "La Repubblica" and "La Stampa", hosted talk shows devoted to literature, music and cinema. In 1991, his first novel - "Castles of Anger" was published, but in 1993 he became one of the co-founders of the Turin Writers' Workshop School, or the Holden School (Scuola Holden), which got its name thanks to J. Holden Caulfield, the main character of D. Salinger's novel "On the Precipice in the Rye Field".
Alessandro Barrico's creative biography currently includes 13 novels, several screenplays, many reflections and articles, as well as the film "21. lecture" dedicated to Beethoven's Ninth Symphony (2008, directorial debut).
"...the presence of music is felt in all his novels, because Barrico has two souls - literary and musical, and they are inseparable, like two connected vessels .
Music, philosophy, architecture, painting, history, literature - this is where he gets the endless plots of his compositions, in which his characters are also born: geniuses and weirdos, fantasists and crazy inventors; all his characters will be remembered for a long time: Mr. Rail and Peckish from Castles of Fury, Hervé Joncourt from Silk, Bartleboom and Plasson from Ocean Seas, and of course Danny Budman T.D. Novecento - the genius pianist who plays in the middle of the ocean ..." (Natalia Kolesova, translator)

"This story, which is alien to modern problems, is almost a fairy tale. It is home to an extraordinary pianist who is born and dies on a ship without ever coming ashore. Barrico is focused on the idea, not the style: he starts one phrase, from which another image is born, then he moves to a new phrase, and so on. Just like in real life.”
